5th grade | Native American Storytelling

In 5th grade art we have started discussing Native American Storytelling.  Today we came up with short stories at our tables using Native American symbols.  Ask you child what their story was about!

 

MARTH- Tessellations

We are very fortunate this year to have some sections in our schedule for Art Enrichment.  The 2nd grade class this year is coming on Wednesday's.  We are doing MATH related art lessons for this particular Art Enrichment Class.  We started our first lesson on "Tessellations".  Ask your child if they remember what a tessellation is!  

 

If not :).....Here's a brief definition: 

 

•   Tessellations are repetitive patterns of shapes that fit perfectly together across a 2-dimensional plane of space (think of how floor tiles fit together, or the graphic artist M.C. Escher).

Who's MC Escher you ask??...the kids like to call him "MC Squishy"  :)  they can remember that name better,,,I can't imagine why ;)

•   Maurits Cornelis Escher, usually referred to as M. C. Escher, was a Dutch graphic artist. He is known for his often mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints.

•   Born: June 17, 1898, Netherlands

•   Died: March 27, 1972, Netherlands

•   Full name: Maurits Cornelis Escher

2nd Grade | Pumpkins

This week we got a great start on our pumpkin composition.  Our medium we are using is "chalk pastel".  We have talked about "overlapping" and "blending" with this lesson.  These should be in the halls soon!  

 

 

Kindergarten | Texture Pumpkins

Today in Kindergarten art we started a NEW fall project!  The TEXTURE PUMPKIN!! 
Ask your child what "texture" is.

 

We talked about the fall season, fall colors, pumpkins, texture, and texture rubbings.

 

We finished the first step of making our "texture rubbing" today.

Second Week and Self Portraits

This week in art we have almost completed all the "welcome back" information to help make our art room run well.  We reviewed and introduced for some the "Art Notebook" time.  If you'd like a good explanation of what this is- ask your kiddos :)

Art notebook is a five minute time the students are given as soon as they walk in the door.  In this time they READ the plan for the day and the "notebook" question, they WRITE their answer, and they ILLUSTRATE their answer.  So, in 5 minutes we've covered three very important items! 

 

**See if your child can remember what their "notebook question" was for this week!

 

We've also started easing into our first actual art projects!  SELF PORTRAITS!!!

 

K-5th grade will all be creating a self portrait. 

 

Ask your child "Who is a self portrait a picture of?"

Our Hopes and Dreams for Art!

This week in art we have been busy getting comfortable in the art room.

Some of the things we've talked about include:

- Entering the room

- Give me 5

- Take a break

- Line up

- Hallway

** See if your child can tell you what is expected of them for each of the items listed above!

Now that we are all familiar with our classroom routines and know what is expected of us in art, the beginning of our year will go much smoother!

Today we started discussing our "hopes and dreams for art".  Below are some student examples.  Some students said, 

"My hope for art this year is...

- to use paint

- to have my art displayed in the Halverson Hall of Fame

- to draw a whale

- to use clay 

- etc...

My hope for everyone this year in art is to have fun!

Welcome Back!

 I am SO excited to see you all back here at Halverson next Tuesday!

 

Can you believe summer went so fast?

 

I will be the full time art teacher this year at Halverson.  This means I will be EVERYONES art teacher K-5th grade!  I couldn't be more excited about this! 

 

I have been checking in on the blog stats (this tells me how many of you use the blog each day) and I've seen SO MANY of you using it!  This makes me so happy :)!  I will be adding a lot of new posts soon and many new art games. 

If you haven't had a chance to play any of the art games yet, remember they are on the left had side near the top!
