February is I LOVE TO READ MONTH and March is Dr. Seuss's birthday!  

To celebrate both of these things, we have connected to book to each of our art projects in K-5th grade art! 

1st grade's book is One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.

2nd Grade | Paper Pumpkin Sculpture

We started the year discussing Van Gogh and transitioned into talking about Chihuly who is a famous glass blowing sculptor who emphasizes COLOR in his artwork.  After completing our warm and cool colored landscapes, we made paper pumpkin sculptures in honor of Chihuly!

Check out how they rocked using LINE and free-hand drew theses pumpkins.  

Then, they practiced some color mixing using paint to mix two primary colors to create a secondary color!! 

Ask your kiddos:

- what are the primary colors?

- what happens when I mix them?

- yellow + blue=???

- blue + red=??

- red+yellow=???

I bet they will surprise you with all they know!!

Chihuly

In all grades we have been talking about Chihuly, the famous artist who creates glass sculptures!

He uses a LOT of COLOR!  Especially the PRIMARY colors!

We have been talking about how the primary colors mix to make the secondary colors.

RED, BLUE, and YELLOW are the PRIMARY colors.

They mix to make the secondary colors GREEN, PURPLE, and BLUE.

Kindergarten and first grade created a Chihuly inspired art project using only the primary colors....but when they got wet, THEY MIXED and made the SECONDARY COLORS also!

This is a collaborative piece of art work that every student K-5th grade who comes to art was a part of! The inspiration from this piece of artwork came from  Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch painter famous for inspiring Expressionism.

Stop in and watch this piece grow as more flowers are added daily!

Sunflowers is one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings.  

The colors are vibrant and express emotions typically associated with the life of sunflowers: bright yellows of the full bloom to arid browns of wilting; all of the stages woven through these polar opposites are presented. Perhaps this very technique is what draws one into the painting; the fulfillment of seeing all angles of the spectrum of life and in turn reaching a deeper understanding of how all living things are tied together.
