4th and 5th Grade | Snowflakes or Scherenschnitte

.
As we finish our previous project we have started a fun winter project based off of a German art form  known as Scherenschnitte

"It’s pronounced SHARE-en-shnit-tah and it’s a mouthful of a word for such a simple concept. Literally translated from German to English, it means “scissor-cut.” And cutting paper into decorative patterns is what it’s all about, even though  scherenschnitte practitioners frequently use craft knives in addition to, or sometimes instead of, scissors. But for such a simple concept, it’s an art form that has thrived for centuries and taken root in a variety of cultures. 3rd Grade | Finishes Sewing Stockings!

Be on the lookout for stockings headed your way!  We have been working on the beginning steps of using fibers (yarn) and needles (tape wrapped around the end of their yarn) for sewing in preparation for weaving.  We practiced using a "mattress stitch" to sew our stockings together.  Some still need to finish off the end of their stitching but I wanted them to have the stockings home in time for Christmas so I sent them home to be finished with mom and dad!  Ask them the proper way to make a "mattress stitch"!   See below, the stitch wraps around the outer edge.

1st Grade | Finishes Penguins in the Snow!

We are finishing our penguins in the snow!

After we made their hats and scarves, we painted the snow at "paint stations".  To finish off the day we read two books about some silly little penguins; Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice by Steve Metzger and Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester.

Take a peek at everyone's from last week.  The rest will have art today so check back this week if you don't see your child's today!  Click here to see more.

ALC Murals update

I am so proud of my students here at the ALC.  Over the last few weeks they have shown a great deal of responsibility & teamwork while painting their murals.  They are getting closer to being finished.  If you happen to be in the area, stop by our wing of the building and check out the talent and craftsmanship displayed on the walls of our hall!

Click here to see more from today.

1st grade | Penguins in the snow!

This week in 1st grade we started a fun new winter lesson.  One of our standards in 1st grade art is to  Demonstrate use of overlapping to show space.  After we practiced overlapping with our caterpillars, we are now practicing it with our penguins.  Click here to see more.

3rd grade | Holiday Stockings

Today we talked about the "legend" behind the Holiday Stocking.  We discussed what a legend is and what traditions are.  We read a legend about the holiday stocking then we started to make our own holiday stocking.  One of our 3rd grade standards is Use fibers or other materials to create a simple weaving so to start our transition into weaving, we are practicing sewing!

Ask your child about all the steps involved to make these stockings!

ALC Murals are looking GREAT!

My art students at the ALC have been working very hard to get to the point they are finally at with these murals.  They have completed the planning and sketching of these murlas and are now starting the painting process.  What an awesome sight to look down the hall and see each group working so hard!  Click here to see more.

1st Grade | Texture Quilt!

This week in 1st grade we have been talking about texture.  We've discussed the different ways texture feels and the different ways texture looks.  We went on a walk around the school to find different textures to do "rubbings" of.  I was very impressed with how first grade was able to quietly walk in the halls and complete three separate rubbings at three separate locations quickly and quietly!  Keep your eyes open in the halls of Halverson for a LARGE "Texture Quilt" up on the wall!

3rd Grade started something new!

We started a new lesson on Warm and Cool Shapes!  We have been talking about several of the art elements.  Some of the most recent ones are:
  • Space

  • Line

  • Shape

  • Color

  • Value

  • We have also discussed "overlapping" in this lesson.  Click here to see more.

    Catching up on posting...

I got a new camera and needed some help with the software to upload the images.  I am all set now!

Here's a little of what we have been up to lately!

4th and 5th graders finished up their water color leaf projects! Click here to see everyone's

3rd grade started & finished a 1/2 portrait drawing.  We talked about lines, proportions, tints, and shades.  Click here to see more.

3rd grade made a fun TURKEY headband to wear over Thanksgiving break!

1st grade made a cute little turkey to be used as a napkin ring or a table decoration.  They have been working with shapes (most recently circles) and were able to "freehand" cut each of the four circles to make these turkeys.  Click here to see more.

1st grade also completed these primary colored caterpillars.  For this lesson we talked about the primary colors, lines, shapes, and overlapping.  We also read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle to go along with our caterpillar theme. Click here to see more.

4th grade started their new Starry Night drawings.  For this lesson we have been discussing depth: foreground, middle ground, and back ground.  The fourth graders then created their own rendition of Vincent VanGogh's Starry Night.  Click here to see more.

5th grade has been working on a new "Falling Self Portrait".  For this project we are also talking about depth.  If a person were falling, their hands and feet would appear closer to you if you had an aerial view.  We have also been talking about line, positive space, and negative space.  See if your child can give you a brief description of each!  Click here to see more.

EXCITING NEWS!!  Some of the 3rd graders were selected to have a mini art showing in the Brookside Boardroom.  If you have one of these 3rd grade students, you will be getting an invite via mail soon to invite you to come take a peek!  Congratulations to you 3rd graders who put in the hard work to create these awesome drawings!

Stop by again soon to see more of what we've been working on!

    ALC Murals are looking GREAT!

Second QTR art students at the ALC have been focusing on painting.  Most recently they have started painting murals to compliment inspirational quotes that were previously painted.

I am so proud of the hard work they are putting into planning, creating, and working as a team.
