GO NOODLE!!

According to research, exercise and movement in general is essential for your body and brain to function at it's best.  Sitting still for long periods of time is not only difficult for children but also, not good for them.

If your child has talked about any of the fun or silly exercises we've been doing in art lately, let me tell you more!!

For up to 3 minutes we do "brain breaks", "noodle breaks", "neuron builders", etc... in my art room.  The more we move (to some degree) the better we do....in all things, especially learning! If we get moving right away when we come to art we can sit better and our focus is clearer for the learning that is to come.

Some of my favorite activities come from GoNoodle.com

Check it out! You can create an account (just a simple log in) it's free!  You can play the 3 min (on average) clips at home for your kids too!

Here's a sample of one from YouTube....

Keep Moving!
After all....a body (and mind) in motion stays in motion!   Thanks Mr. Newton!

SMELLY MARKERS!!!!

In art we have something called "quiet time".  Because we all work at different speeds, when a student finishes a project, they are allowed to chose an art related activity to use the rest of their class time.  I have several options but one very popular choice is drawing with "smelly markers" as we call them!  I've had several students ask where I get them so I wanted to tell you they are available at Wal-Mart!...And many other places too!   I believe they are around $10 for a full set of 18.
Certified AP nontoxic.

These are great gifts for friends for their birthdays or even stocking-stuffers.

Here's an online line if you are interested too.

1st Grade | Owls

In 1st grade art we have been discussing TEXTURE!!  Actual texture (texture you can actually feel) and visual texture (texture that you can see but not feel).  We have also been discussing LINE!  We used one of the most commonly confused lines, "curved" lines to give our owl visual texture that looks like soft feathers!

Look for these at home soon!
